Redhat liberation-fonts-ttf on Gentoo

While browsing recently I came across reference to the Redhat Liberation Fonts, and a number of favorable reviews of the quality of the fonts. Since they are genuine Open Source fonts I decided to install them on my laptop.

This was dead easy ad the fonts are installable with emerge…

Kim Brebach has written a lucid and compelling article arguing why you should be using Linux on your desktop. You can read the article here

This isn’t for everyone! However, users like myself and my team involved in software development and testing typically have several konsole terminal sessions open and spend much time switching between applications and terminals. On my machine this is compounded by the need to switch between desktops — you can see from the screenshot that I [...]

Adobe Reader and Firefox plugin

In my previous post I described installing Reader v8 on Gentoo.

After that installation I discovered that I could not view PDF files in Firefox. Being a pragmatic Linux user, I ignored this inconvenience until tonight when I thought that I’d find out what I did wrong.

Firstly I checked what plugins were installed in Firefox by [...]

AdobeReader on Gentoo

AdobeReader (also known as Acrobat or acroread) is the free Adobe PDF viewer which is an essential for any modern PC or workstation. Anyway, to find the MAC address of an N-series or E-series phone, enter *#62209626# It is easier to remember this as *#mac wlan#

Realtek RTL8168 and Gentoo

My ASUS V6X00J (V6J) has a Realtek 8168 gigabit PCI ethernet card. Since getting the machine I have been painstakingly compiling the driver from http://realtek.com.tw (firstly R1000 and more recently R8168).

However, since kernel version 2.6.22 these no longer compile. But…

The kernel driver for the Realtek 8169 also works for the RTL8168, even though there is [...]

In the beginning …

… there was nothing. But, as the days progressed there emerged more and more information about using Linux on a PC or Workstation. There were tips, stories about overcoming insurmountable obstacles, toys and many “hell, it couldn’t have been THAT” expletives deleted.

For a more formal explanation of what this blog is about, you guessed it [...]
